Summer 2008

This is the latest news about loggerheads on Kiawah Island.

September 2, 2008 - Nesting season on Kiawah is over for 2008.  We had a total of 228 nests!  Hatching season is well underway, with nests popping all over the place.

July 13, 2008 - Kiawah has 181 nests as of July 13th.  The loggerhead mamas are still coming onto the beach for another 2 or 3 weeks, so we can hope for a record-breaking nesting season.

The first three nests have hatched!!!

July 11, 2008 - There are 175 nests on Kiawah's beach as of this morning.

July 10, 2008 - There are 170 nests on Kiawah as of July 10th.  WOW!  The number of nests is quite close to Kiawah's best year ever (2003) when we ended up with 225 nests on our beach.  There are still 3 to 4 weeks to go, so our mamas could still beat the record!

July 8, 2008 - There are 166 nests on Kiawah as of July 8th. WOW! The number of nests is quite close to Kiawah's best year ever (2003) when we ended up with 225 nests on our beach. There are still 3 to 4 weeks to go, so our mamas could still beat the record! The first nests should begin to hatch this week, so if you are on the beach early in the morning, keep a sharp eye out for baby turtles.

June 30, 2008 - Kiawah's beach had 134 nests as of today. We are well on our way to a good nesting season. The babies should begin to hatch sometime in the next week or so...

June 26, 2008 - There are 130 nests on Kiawah's beach as of June 26th. That puts our mamas just 4 nests shy of their largest nesting season since tracking began back in the 70's! GO MAMAS!

June 22, 2008 - Kiawah's beach had 118 nests as of June 22nd. The mamas continue to arrive at a good pace. We seem to be on pace for a good nesting year.

June 19, 2008 - There are 102 nests on Kiawah's beach as of June 19th. The mamas appear to be well on their way to a good nesting season!

June 16, 2008 - There are currently 87 nests on Kiawah's beach.

June 10, 2008 - There are 72 nests on Kiawah's beach now. That is quite a jump on last year's dismal showing of only 80 nests for the entire season! Guess the loggerhead mamas needed a beach vacation on Kiawah!

June 8, 2008 - As of this morning there are 60 nests on Kiawah's beach. This is more than twice as many as this time last year. GO MAMA TURTLES!

June 2, 2008 - Kiawah's beach has 39 nests as of this morning. The mama loggerheads have been busy this year!

May 30, 2008 - There are 33 nests on Kiawah's beach! Remember that "sea turtles dig the dark" so please keep flashlights turned off while on the beach, and shield any lighting on the ocean side of homes and condos.
May 27, 2008 - Turtle News: There are 20 nests on Kiawah's beach as of Sunday May 25th. Given that the mamas began nesting on May 11th, that is a decent number of nests for two weeks!

May 22, 2008 - A rare leatherback sea turtle nested on last night. This is the first leatherback nest for both Kiawah and in the state of South Carolina! Leatherback sea turtles are the largest living reptiles on earth, and are on the Endangered Species List.

May 11, 2008 - Nesting season has officially begun!  The first nest of the season was located this morning.  The mama turtles are right on time, starting on Mother's Day.

April 15, 2008 - The annual training and t-shirt pick-up session was at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandcastle.  Well-dressed turtle patrollers will be wearing tan t-shirts this year.
